Sevilla’s search for goals may finally be pushing Matías Almeyda towards a significant tactical shift, with the club’s head coach openly weighing up a move away from his usual one-striker approach in a bid to get more out of Akor Adams, footynaija.com reports.

The Nigeria forward’s first months in Andalusia have been uneven. After joining permanently from Montpellier last January, Adams managed three goals and two assists in 14 league appearances this season before leaving for the Africa Cup of Nations, numbers that mirrored Sevilla’s wider struggles in attack.

By the time he departed, the club were ninth; in his absence, they slid down the table after four consecutive defeats without scoring.

Morocco, however, proved a turning point. Used by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle in a 4-4-2 diamond alongside Victor Osimhen, Adams thrived. His tireless running and intelligent movement helped Nigeria finish the tournament as the top-scoring side, and his own return of two goals and two assists in five matches underlined a surge in confidence.

That form has followed him back to Spain. Adams announced his return with both goals in a 2-2 draw at Elche, a result that finally brought Sevilla their first point of 2026. With Athletic Bilbao visiting next, Almeyda knows the urgency is growing and has begun to consider pairing Adams with Isaac Romero more regularly.

“It’s always good when our striker scores,” Almeyda said as per Mucho Deporte.

“Both of them came into the match with renewed energy, fresh from a good run of form, and that shows on a player’s face. Akor had the first goal, after hitting the post earlier. The second was a great finish, and he showed commitment by taking the penalty. We might see them together, yes, now or later.”

Sevilla are 15th with 21 points from 20 games, and while the draw at Elche offered a glimpse of hope, a home win over Bilbao would represent a far more meaningful step towards climbing back up the table.
