Matchday One of AFCON 2025 has set the tone, with 12 games, 29 goals, and only one draw as early contenders begin to separate themselves from the rest, Footynaija.com reports.

Nigeria did their part with a 2-1 win over Tanzania, but the opening round showed that the Super Eagles will not have an easy path if they are to go deep in Morocco.

A number of teams already look well-equipped to test Eric Chelle’s side, either through quality, momentum, or tournament pedigree.

Senegal look ruthless again

Senegal’s 3-0 win over Botswana was one of the standout performances of the first round. Nicolas Jackson grabbed a brace and led the charge in a display full of pace, power, and control.

The Lions of Teranga looked in control without needing to push too hard, and that kind of efficient dominance over weaker sides is always a warning sign at AFCON. They also stayed tight at the back, something Nigeria couldn’t quite manage, especially in the second half against Tanzania.

Algeria appear sharp and motivated

Algeria’s 3-0 win over Sudan was all about balance. Riyad Mahrez pulled the strings with two goals and calm control, proving the Desert Foxes still lean on their experienced heads when it comes to handling tournament pressure.

Algeria controlled the game from start to finish, barely giving Sudan a sniff. Their attacking play was sharp and well-structured. If Nigeria run into them later in the tournament, it’ll take real discipline and control in midfield to keep up.

Morocco carry the weight of hosts and favourites

Morocco kicked off AFCON 2025 with a solid 2-0 win over Comoros in front of a packed crowd of over 60,000. Brahim Diaz pulled the strings in midfield, picking up Man of the Match and showing he’s ready to lead creatively.

Playing at home gives the Atlas Lions an advantage Nigeria won’t have, especially when the pressure ramps up in the knockout rounds. They’re well-drilled at the back and rarely let teams control the pace of the game.

Tunisia deliver early warning

Tunisia’s 3-1 win over Uganda was one of the sharpest attacking performances of matchday one. Elias Achouri bagged a brace and kept stretching Uganda’s backline all game. Tunisia are known to grow into tournaments, and if they keep finishing chances like this, slow-starting teams like Nigeria could be in trouble.

Egypt remain stubborn and dangerous

With a narrow 2-1 win, the Pharaohs of Egypt didn’t really dominate the game against Zimbabwe though they got the job done. Omar Marmoush and Mo Salah stepped up, and once again, Egypt proved they know how to survive in AFCON. They stay calm in tight games and find ways to win, a trait that has made them a tough matchup for Nigeria in recent tournaments.

Ivory Coast and Cameroon wait in the shadows

Ivory Coast and Cameroon both picked up 1-0 wins. They were not flashy, but full of control. Manchester United’s duo Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo provided the key moments for their respective countries as both sides stayed solid at the back. These are the kind of teams that don’t need to impress early to go far. They stay patient and punish any team that wastes chances.

Where Nigeria stand

Nigeria’s win over Tanzania was professional, but not flawless. Semi Ajayi and Ademola Lookman delivered when needed, yet the numbers showed moments of vulnerability. The Super Eagles have quality to match any side here, but Matchday One suggests they will need consistency, sharper game management, and improved defensive concentration to stay ahead of the strongest challengers.
