Ahmed Musa has announced his retirement from international football, ending a 15-year career with the Super Eagles that made him Nigeria’s most capped player, Footynaija.com reports.

The former Leicester City winger confirmed his decision on Instagram on Wednesday, a day after Nigeria’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Egypt in Cairo. Musa steps away from the national team with 111 caps, three World Cups and five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments to his name.

“I wore this badge with pride for 15 years. From a 17-year-old boy answering every call to becoming the most capped Super Eagle with 111 appearances. AFCON champion Nigeria’s highest World Cup goalscorer ⚽️

“Captain. Servant. Believer.

“I gave everything.

“Thank you Nigeria… my heart will always beat green ”

Musa’s retirement follows his omission from Eric Chelle’s squad for the upcoming AFCON in Morocco and comes after a period in which his role steadily declined under successive coaches.

Tributes quickly poured in from across Nigerian football. Former captain William Troost-Ekong wrote “Legend,” while Wilfred Ndidi posted: “Skippo. Governor. Legend.” Odion Ighalo added simply: “Skippo.”

Musa remains Nigeria’s highest goalscorer at the FIFA World Cup, scoring twice against Argentina in 2014 and twice more against Iceland in 2018. He was part of the squad that won AFCON in 2013 and claimed silver at the 2023 tournament.

Though his playing days with the Super Eagles are over, Musa continues to serve Nigerian football as General Manager of Kano Pillars, the club where his remarkable journey began.
