“We haven’t been lucky” – Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare rues Wolves’ narrow defeat to Arsenal

Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare could barely hide his disappointment after Wolverhampton Wanderers’ narrow 2-1 defeat to Premier League leaders Arsenal on Saturday, Footynaija.com reports.

Arokodare finally got off the mark in the English top flight when he met Mateus Mane’s cross in the 90th minute. The Nigerian’s goal cancelled out Arsenal’s 70th minute opener and looked set to rescue a point for Wolves.

However, the North Londoners had the final say as Bukayo Saka forced an own goal from Yerson Mosquera deep into stoppage time to deny Rob Edwards’ side a first Premier League point in seven games.

“It’s hurtful,” Arokodare told TNT Sports after the game. “It has been happening to us all season. We only the whole ninety minutes very good and then we concede in the last minute. I don’t know how to explain it but it’s very hurtful.

“It is not the first time we conceded in the last minute. It’s something that we have to work on – staying focused to the last whistle – very unlucky for us. Good goal from them, and I would say it was a little bit of poor defending from us.

“It’s something we’ve been working on. We did have a few chances in the second half and we have that quality, but we haven’t been lucky in attacking or defending. Hopefully in the coming games we will score more goals and everything will change.”

Arokodare will remain in England with Wolverhampton Wanderers despite the imminent departure of his compatriots for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after missing out on a spot in Eric Chelle’s final squad.

After losing his place as Victor Osimhen’s back up to Sevilla’s Akor Adams during the World Cup qualifiers, the former Genk man ultimately lost his place in the squad to in-form Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu.

He’ll be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of missing out on the Africa Cup of Nations by putting together some sort of scoring run in the Premier League and helping Wolves climb out of relegation waters.
