Taiwo Awoniyi came on as a substitute in Nottingham Forest’s crucial 3-1 victory over Leeds United, but the Super Eagles forward struggled to make a significant impact during his limited time on the pitch, Footynaija.com reports.
Awoniyi, who featured for 31 minutes, endured a quiet outing in attack, managing only eight touches overall, with just one of those coming inside the opposition box to highlight his limited involvement in Nottingham Forest’s attack.
Forest boss Sean Dyche would’ve been hoping for some sort of impact when he introduced Awoniyi into the fray with the game level at 1-1 but the Nigeria international completed just two of four passes and failed to register a single shot.
Ultimately, Morgan Gibbs-White and Elliot Anderson went on to win the game for Dyche’s men, adding second half strikes to Ibrahim Sangare’s first half leveller to hand Nottingham Forest their second win in the Premier League this term.
This season has been a frustrating one for Awoniyi who has started just one of his four appearances and accumulated only 133 minutes of game time. The 28-year-old currently finds himself behind Igor Jesus and Chris Wood in the pecking order at Forest.
His struggles at club level have also spilled over to the international scene as he remains out of Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles plans since the Franco-Malian took charge at the start of the year.
Certainly, Awoniyi will know that rediscovering form and consistency will be crucial if he hopes to regain his place both at Nottingham Forest and with the Nigerian national team.
