Newly promoted Serie A side Venezia are hoping to strengthen their squad by signing Super Eagles midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru from Lazio ahead of the new season, Footynaija reports.
The 25-year-old has caught the attention of several clubs after spending two years at Lazio. Although he showed flashes of quality, he found it difficult to hold down a regular starting place because of injuries and inconsistent form. During his time with the club, he scored seven goals and provided four assists in 57 matches across all competitions.
According to transfer expert Damiano Er Faina, Venezia are now following Dele-Bashiru closely. The Nigerian can only leave if both clubs agree on a transfer fee as Lazio are not willing to consider a loan deal. Dele-Bashiru, who is highly valued at Lazio, remains under contract until 2028 with the Italian side.
Earlier in the transfer window, Manchester United were linked with the midfielder. Reports claimed the Premier League club saw him as a strong and energetic option who could support young star Kobbie Mainoo and eventually help replace veteran Casemiro. The connection was boosted by director of football Jason Wilcox, who knew Dele-Bashiru from their time together in Manchester City’s academy.
However, United later switched their attention to other midfield targets, giving Venezia a better chance of signing the Nigerian. It remains to be seen whether new Lazio coach Gennaro Gattuso will keep Dele-Bashiru or allow him to leave before the transfer window closes.
