William Troost-Ekong believes the Super Eagles need to have three crucial qualities in the squad as they prepare to launch their bid for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations crown at the 2025 edition of the tournament in Morocco later this year, Footynaija.com reports.

Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong came agonisingly close to leading Nigeria to a fourth continental title in 2023. However, a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to hosts Cote d’Ivoire in the final condemned the three-time African champions to a runner-up finish.

As the next Africa Cup of Nations approaches, Nigeria will once again aim to go all the way. To achieve that, Troost-Ekong believes the team must embody three essential qualities whenever they take to the field in Morocco.

What Super Eagles need to win AFCON

“Heart, togetherness and consistency,” Troost-Ekong said, per CAF Online. “Cote d’Ivoire showed real spirit—every setback seemed to fuel belief. From my experiences—third place, then second—momentum has to grow through the tournament.

“New stars often emerge; it’s not always the names you expect. Start well, manage emotions, don’t get carried away when things go right or panic when they don’t. Tournaments are won in phases: grow through the group, then approach each knockout game calmly.”

Are Super Eagles favourites to win AFCON?

Barring injuries or unforeseen circumstances, Nigeria will head to the tournament with one of the most talented squads on the continent. Yet with such quality comes the familiar weight of expectation and the pressure of being labelled favourites.

Troost-Ekong, however, remains grounded. The Al Khoolod defender was quick to point out that other nations will also pose serious threats, warning that complacency could prove costly.

“I think that’s overstated. We’ve got an amazing squad—too many players to name—but objectively, Morocco are at home and in great form; Cote d’Ivoire are defending champions; Senegal,… there’s no such thing as a clear favourite at AFCON.

“Last time, not many tipped us to go that far. You can’t win a tournament with expectations, and we won’t get complacent. AFCON is difficult, and strong teams can emerge from unexpected places. We trust ourselves, but I wouldn’t say we’re clear favourites.”

The Super Eagles will compete in Group C against the likes of Tunisia, Tanzania and Uganda when the tournament kicks off in December. At the very least, they will be confident of progressing into the knockout rounds.
