“We have a good chance” – Benin’s Steve Mounie confident ahead crunch World Cup qualifier vs Super Eagles

Benin Republic striker Steve Mounie is brimming with confidence ahead of Tuesday’s decisive World Cup qualification match against the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Footynaija.com reports.

The Cheetahs are top of Group C heading into the clash set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. As things stand, they are one victory away from securing a first ever World Cup qualification.

However, before them is a tough hurdle in the Super Eagles, who themselves are still hopeful of clinching the World Cup ticket. Nigeria trail Benin by three points and so need to win by at least a two goal margin while hoping results elsewhere go in their favour.

Despite the apparent difficulty of the task ahead for Benin, beating Nigeria isn’t beyond them. They triumphed 2-1 in the reverse fixture of this tie and remain the only team that have defeated the Super Eagles in Group C.

This has given Mounie some confidence going into the game in Uyo. The former Brighton and Hove Albion striker believes the Cheetahs can orchestrate the Super Eagles’ downfall one more time.

“I didn’t even know the statistics. But it shows that we have a good chance,” Mounie said, per Pooja Media.

“If we are the only team that has beaten Nigeria, then we are the only team that can beat Nigeria again. Hopefully we’ll take our chances tomorrow and get the qualification.”

There seems to be plenty of confidence in the Benin camp heading into this game. The Cheetahs’ head coach Gernot Rohr also recently backed his side to do something great against Nigeria in Uyo.

From all indications, the Beninese have no intention of coming to bend over for the Super Eagles in Uyo, promising the intrigue and entertainment befitting of such a high-stakes encounter.
