The UEFA Champions League has long been a proving ground for Nigerian footballers. From Finidi George’s early days with Ajax to Victor Osimhen’s modern-day heroics, players from Nigeria have left their footprints on Europe’s biggest stage with goals that live in memory.

In this piece, Footynaija.com brings you the definitive ranking of the Top 8 Nigerian goalscorers in the Champions League.

8. John Utaka, Finidi George, Peter Odemwingie, John Obi Mikel, Victor Olatunji, James Obiorah and Ayila Yussuf — 2 goals each

This group features players from different generations. John Utaka struck twice for Lens while Finidi George also scored two during his successful spell at Ajax. Peter Odemwingie found the net twice for Lille, and John Obi Mikel, better known for midfield control, managed two for Chelsea.

Rising striker Victor Olatunji scored twice for Sparta Prague before his move to Real Salt Lake in August 2025. James Obiorah chipped in with two for Lokomotiv Moscow and Ayila Yussuf matched that while at Dynamo Kyiv.

7. Tijani Babangida, Shola Ameobi and George Ilenikhena — 3 goals each

Ajax winger Tijani Babangida’s three goals came in the late 1990s when his pace made him a constant threat.

Shola Ameobi’s three strikes for Newcastle remain highlights of his long career in England. George Ilenikhena, still only 19 with Monaco, has already scored three times in the competition and looks set for a bright future.

6. Anthony Nwakaeme, Michael Obiku and Samuel Chukwueze — 4 goals each

Anthony Nwakaeme impressed for Hapoel Beer-Sheva with four goals in their European campaigns. Michael Obiku, once of Feyenoord, also scored four before adding more during his time with Anorthosis Famagusta.

Samuel Chukwueze, now 26 and under contract with AC Milan until 2028, has also netted four Champions League goals, split between Villarreal and Milan, underlining his ability to shine on the biggest nights.

5. Brown Ideye, Nwankwo Kanu, Emmanuel Dennis and Ademola Lookman — 5 goals each

Brown Ideye delivered five goals across his time with Dynamo Kyiv and Olympiacos. Nwankwo Kanu scored five while representing Ajax and Arsenal, often displaying his flair on European nights.

Emmanuel Bonaventure, better known simply as Dennis, hit five during his spell with Club Brugge. Now 27, he is best remembered for scoring twice against Real Madrid in 2019 while playing for the Belgian outfit. Ademola Lookman, crowned African Footballer of the Year in 2024, has scored five for Atalanta. Reports in Italy confirm he has handed in a transfer request, amid an ongoing transfer battle.

4. Ahmed Musa — 6 goals

Ahmed Musa’s six Champions League goals came mainly during his days at CSKA Moscow, where his pace made him a constant menace for defenders.

3. Julius Aghahowa, Emmanuel Emenike, Viktor Ikpeba and Yakubu Aiyegbeni — 7 goals each

Julius Aghahowa scored seven goals for Shakhtar Donetsk and was celebrated for his trademark acrobatic celebrations. Emmanuel Emenike also reached seven, scoring for Spartak Moscow, Fenerbahçe and Olympiacos.

Viktor Ikpeba, remembered as the “Prince of Monaco”, netted seven during the 1990s before moving to Borussia Dortmund. Yakubu Aiyegbeni struck seven while leading the line for Maccabi Haifa, goals that helped launch his move to England.

2. Victor Osimhen — 9 goals

Victor Osimhen, Nigeria’s biggest name today, already has nine goals in the Champions League. His move to Galatasaray was confirmed in July 2025 for a record €75 million after an explosive loan season where he scored 37 goals in all competitions.

At just 26 years old, Osimhen is closing in fast on Martins’ record and may soon take over as Nigeria’s top scorer in Europe’s elite competition.

1. Obafemi Martins — 10 goals

Obafemi Martins stands alone at the top with 10 Champions League goals scored for Inter Milan, Wolfsburg and Rubin Kazan. Known for his lightning pace and unforgettable somersault celebrations, Martins has been Nigeria’s record holder for years. His mark remains the benchmark for those coming after him, though Osimhen is now within touching distance.

Some names shaped the competition in the past, while the new generation led by Osimhen, Lookman, Chukwueze and Ilenikhena are writing fresh history. With Martins still holding the crown on 10 goals, the question now is how long before Osimhen claims it for himself.
