Ajibade sends message to Nigerians as Super Falcons gear up for stern Tunisia test in WAFCON opener

The Super Falcons are in high spirits as they prepare to kick off their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign in Morocco, according to team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Footynaija.com reports.

Ajibade and company face a stern test in their tournament opener when they clash with Tunisia at the Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca. However, they will draw confidence from their solid form in the build-up to the competition.

In friendly games played just before their departure for Morocco, the Falcons battled to a gritty goalless draw against Portugal and followed it up with a commanding 2-0 victory over their West African rivals Ghana on home soil.

Rasheedat Ajibade’s message to Nigerians

Speaking ahead of their opening group game, Ajibade expressed optimism about the squad’s mood and readiness for the challenge. She also urged Nigerians to back the team as they embark on their mission in Morocco.

“The mood in camp is amazing. The players are looking forward to the start of this tournament,” Ajibade said as revealed by Ademola Victor via X.

“We can’t wait to show off that talent as a team and also put what we’ve been learning together on the pitch.

“So, my word to the family back home, and all our friends who support us across the continent — keep praying for us, keep supporting us.

“Our goal and mission here is to make you proud as always, and make sure we do our best.”

While the Super Falcons have long been a dominant force in African women’s football, recent years have been less flattering. They endured a disappointing fourth-place finish last time out, their worst performance in over two decades.

This year, under the guidance of head coach Justin Magudu, the Falcons are eager to restore their supremacy and remind the continent why they are regarded as queens of African football.

All eyes will be on Ajibade and her teammates as they look to begin their campaign with a statement win and set the tone for what many Nigerians are hoping will be a triumphant tournament.
