Nigeria’s Super Falcons delivered a commanding performance in Casablanca to begin their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign with a stylish 3-0 victory over Tunisia, Footynaija.com reports.

Goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and Chinwendu Ihezuo ensured a flying start for Justin Madugu’s side, who completely outclassed their North African opponents in what turned out to be Tunisia’s heaviest-ever WAFCON defeat.

The evening began with a moment of silence in honour of former Nigeria goalkeeper Peter Rufai, who passed away last week.

Moments later, the Falcons were off to a flying start. In the fourth minute, Babajide whipped in a pinpoint cross for Oshoala to nod home, setting the tone for a dominant first half.

Nigeria doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time. Babajide, who spent four years at Liverpool Ladies, was initially denied by the referee after her goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up. But after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, and the goal stood. Her celebration — a tribute to late Liverpool star Diogo Jota — added a poignant touch to a brilliant performance.

Babajide’s first half alone saw her register one goal and one assist, causing constant problems for the Tunisian defence.

After the break, Nigeria rang the changes with Oshoala, Babajide, and Abiodun making way. But the flow continued. Plumptre came close from distance, while the lively substitutes added fresh legs and impetus.

The final blow came in the 84th minute. Plumptre floated in a teasing cross, Okoronkwo nodded it down, and Ihezuo applied a clinical finish with her left foot.

It was a goal crafted by two substitutes and a testament to Madugu’s tactical awareness.

Tunisia thought they had a lifeline via a penalty in the 79th minute, but VAR ruled it out for a foul in the build-up.

Full-time confirmed Nigeria’s 29th group stage win in WAFCON history (W37 D5 L3), as they chase a record-extending 10th title.
