Calvin Bassey has urged Fulham to stay united and fight through their difficult start to the Premier League season, with the Nigerian defender calling on his teammates and supporters to stand together after another painful defeat left the club searching for its first league win, Footynaija.com reports.
Fulham looked set to end their winless run when Ryan Sessegnon gave them the lead against Ipswich Town in the 55th minute on Saturday, but late goals from Abdoul Ouattara and Dara O’Shea turned the game around and handed the hosts a 2-1 victory. The result left Álvaro Arbeloa’s side with only two points from their opening six league matches.
For Bassey, the afternoon carried a personal milestone despite the disappointing result. The centre-back played the full match at Portman Road, reaching 100 Premier League appearances for Fulham.
He became the 28th player to reach that mark for the club and the second Nigerian to do so, after Super Eagles teammate Alex Iwobi. PUNCH Sports Extra reported the achievement on Sunday.
Bassey calls for unity at Fulham
The 26-year-old acknowledged the difficult spell in a message to supporters, while making clear that the team must face the challenge together.
“Thank you for the support. I know it’s a difficult period, but we’ve got to stay together & fight as one,” Bassey wrote on Instagram.
He also expressed pride in reaching the 100-game milestone, a personal achievement that came on a frustrating afternoon for the club.
Bassey joined Fulham from Ajax in July 2023 after previously playing for Rangers. Since then, he has become a regular in the team’s defence and has continued to feature for Nigeria at international level.
Fulham have a week to prepare for their next league match, when they host Hull City at Craven Cottage on Saturday, October 17.
