Super Eagles defender Abdullahi Bewene has sent a strong message ahead of Nigeria’s friendly against Russia, insisting the Super Eagles will respect their opponents without being intimidated, Footynaija.com reports.
Nigeria will face Russia on Tuesday, October 6, at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, with Eric Chelle using the fixture to assess a largely youthful squad following the Super Eagles’ disappointing start to their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign.
Bewene is among the players handed an opportunity after missing the qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau, with the Baník Ostrava defender keen to make the most of his return to the national team.
The 21-year-old admitted he would have loved to be involved in the AFCON qualifiers but said he remains grateful to have another opportunity to represent Nigeria.

“Like I told you last time, I am very happy to be back in the national team after my previous outing before the World Cup, when we played Poland and Portugal,” Bewene told Footy-Africa.
“I would have loved to make the squad for the AFCON qualifiers, but I am still happy to be part of this team.
“It is always a good feeling when your talent is recognized and appreciated, and I am very grateful for this chance. I do not take it for granted.”
Abdullahi Bewene’s message to Russia

While acknowledging the threat posed by Russia on home soil, the versatile defender insists Nigeria will not approach the contest with fear.
“Russia at home are very dangerous and will cause us a lot of problems, but we will be ready for them. We respect them, but we do not fear anyone,” Bewene added.
“We will give it our best shot and hopefully get something from the game.”
The Super Eagles will be looking to respond positively after their 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau, while Bewene will hope the Russia clash gives him the platform to strengthen his case for a bigger role under Chelle.
For the Czech based star, the friendly represents more than just another international appearance, with a strong showing potentially giving him valuable momentum as he competes for a regular place in Nigeria’s evolving squad.
