Guinea-Bissau stunned Nigeria with a 3-0 victory on Tuesday, handing the Super Eagles their first defeat in regulation time under head coach Eric Chelle, Footynaija reports.
Franculino Djú gave the hosts the lead in the 15th minute at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro. Renato Nhaga found Djú inside the box, and the forward kept his cool to fire past Nigeria’s goalkeeper.
Nigeria had most of the ball but struggled to turn possession into clear chances. The Super Eagles were also missing injured striker Victor Osimhen, whose absence was badly felt in attack.
Moses Usor came close to bringing Nigeria back into the game after the break. The winger cut inside from the right and curled a powerful left-footed shot towards goal, but the ball struck the crossbar.
Guinea-Bissau then punished Nigeria’s attacking approach in the 64th minute through Mama Balde. A quick counter-attack caught the Super Eagles’ defence out of position, allowing the hosts to score a second goal and seal a famous victory.
Nigeria finished the game with 62% possession and 12 shots, but only three were on target. Guinea-Bissau also had 12 shots, with seven on target, showing greater efficiency in front of goal.
Álvaro Djaló added a third in stoppage time.
The defeat is Nigeria’s first regulation-time loss in a competitive match under Chelle. It is also the first time Guinea-Bissau have scored twice against the Super Eagles in a competitive meeting.
The result puts Guinea-Bissau in a strong position in AFCON 2027 qualifying Group L with six points, while Nigeria sit second behind the Djurtus with three points. Both Madagascar and Tanzania trail by one point after battling to a 1-1 draw in the other group game.
