Nigeria 2-0 Comoros: Alozie, Kanu fire Super Falcons to first-leg win over Coelacanths
Nigeria’s Super Falcons took a significant step towards the third round of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over Comoros on Friday night, Footynaija reports.
Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu scored in the second half to hand interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen a winning start in his first official match in charge of the women’s national team.
The encounter, played at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, was officially a home fixture for Comoros. However, the island nation had to host the tie in Nigeria because it lacked a stadium approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The Super Falcons dominated possession in the first half but struggled to break down a stubborn Comorian defence. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade came closest to opening the scoring in the 26th minute, only to see her effort strike the woodwork.
Nigeria went into the break frustrated, but their persistence paid off three minutes after the restart.
Alozie broke the deadlock in the 48th minute, finishing from close range after Gift Monday’s knockdown to give the African champions a deserved lead.
The Super Falcons continued to press and doubled their advantage on the hour mark. Jennifer Echegini delivered a corner into the box, and Kanu rose highest to head home and give Nigeria breathing space.
Eguavoen’s side maintained their advantage to secure a comfortable victory despite missing key players, including Asisat Oshoala and Ashleigh Plumptre.
The result gives Nigeria a two-goal cushion ahead of Tuesday’s return leg, scheduled for the same venue on October 13.
The aggregate winners will advance to the third round, where Morocco await.
