Nigeria’s Super Falcons took a significant step towards the next round of the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers with a 2-0 victory over Comoros in the first leg of their second-round tie on Friday, Footynaija.com reports.
Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu scored after the break to hand interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen a winning start, giving the 10-time African champions a two-goal advantage ahead of Tuesday’s return fixture.
However, despite their victory, Nigeria had to work patiently to break down a determined Comoros side after struggling to convert their first-half chances.
Here are four key takeaways from the Super Falcons’ win.
1. Eguavoen makes winning start as interim coach

Eguavoen began his spell in charge of the Super Falcons with a victory that puts Nigeria in a strong position to advance in the Olympic qualifiers.
The former Super Eagles coach watched his side dominate much of the contest but struggle to find a breakthrough before the interval.
Nigeria eventually found their rhythm after the restart, scoring twice to secure a comfortable result.
While the performance was not flawless, the victory provides a positive foundation for Eguavoen as he looks to guide the team through the qualifying campaign.
2. Super Falcons need to be more clinical

Nigeria created several opportunities in the opening half but went into the break without a goal to show for their efforts.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade came closest to breaking the deadlock when her effort struck the woodwork, while other promising attacks failed to produce the required finish.
The Falcons eventually made their dominance count after the restart, but their wastefulness in front of goal remains an area to address.
Against stronger opposition later in the qualifying campaign, Nigeria may not enjoy the same number of opportunities, making improved finishing particularly important.
3. Alozie and Kanu deliver when Nigeria need them

With Nigeria struggling to turn their superiority into goals, Michelle Alozie and Uchenna Kanu stepped up to make the difference.
Alozie broke the deadlock in the 48th minute, reacting to Gift Monday’s header in the penalty area before finishing from close range.
Kanu then doubled Nigeria’s advantage around the hour mark, heading home Jennifer Echegini’s corner to give the Falcons valuable breathing space.
Their contributions underlined the importance of having players capable of delivering decisive moments when a game becomes difficult to unlock.
The two goals also ensured Nigeria took a healthy advantage into the return leg.
4. Clean sheet gives Nigeria a strong platform for the return leg

Beyond the two goals, Nigeria’s defensive performance was another positive from the encounter.
Comoros struggled to seriously trouble the Super Falcons, who protected their advantage to finish with a clean sheet.
The result leaves Nigeria well placed ahead of Tuesday’s second leg, which will also take place at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne because Comoros do not have a CAF-approved venue for the tie.
However, the Falcons must remain focused rather than assume the job is already done.
With a place in the next qualifying round at stake, Nigeria will need another disciplined performance to complete the job and move closer to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
