Nigeria’s Flamingos begin their quest for global glory at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup on Saturday, October 17, when they face Poland in their opening Group B fixture in Rabat, Morocco, Footynaija reports.

Head coach Akeem Busari has assembled a 21-player squad led by captain Harmony Chidi for the tournament, which brings together 24 nations from six continents. The Nigerian youngsters will also face Puerto Rico and defending champions Korea DPR as they attempt to improve on the country’s best-ever finish in the competition.

The Flamingos secured their place in Morocco after an impressive African qualifying campaign and will be hoping their attacking quality can help them compete with the world’s best youth teams.

When and where is the 2026 U-17 Women’s World Cup?

The 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup runs from October 17 to November 7 in Morocco, with the matches taking place in Rabat.

The tournament is the 10th edition of the competition and the second under FIFA’s expanded format, which features 24 teams instead of the previous 16-team structure.

Morocco is hosting the tournament as part of FIFA’s decision to award the North African country five consecutive editions from 2025 to 2029. The annual format gives more young players the opportunity to compete at the highest level of international youth football.

Nigeria will be among the countries hoping to make a strong impression, having established itself as one of Africa’s most recognisable teams at this level.

How did the Flamingos qualify?

Nigeria booked their ticket to Morocco after overcoming Benin Republic in the final round of African qualifying.

The Flamingos won the two-legged tie 8-5 on aggregate after recording a 3-2 victory in the first leg before completing qualification with a thrilling 5-3 away win in Cotonou.

Queen Joseph was particularly influential in the decisive encounter, scoring a hat-trick to help Nigeria overcome Benin’s resistance.

Mary Akpan Dunstan and Esther Enne Stephen also found the net as the Nigerian side demonstrated its attacking potential.

The Flamingos subsequently won the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup, providing further encouragement ahead of their World Cup campaign. Their challenge now is to translate their regional success into results against stronger international opposition.

Who is the Flamingos’ head coach?

Akeem Busari is the man responsible for guiding Nigeria through the tournament.

The coach named a 21-player squad featuring three goalkeepers, seven defenders, five midfielders and six forwards.

Captain Harmony Chidi, who plays for Bayelsa Queens, is expected to play an important leadership role as Nigeria pursue a deep run in Morocco.

The squad also includes Queen Joseph, Precious Oscar, Tosin Rafiu and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi among the attacking options.

Busari will need to find the right balance between defensive discipline and attacking ambition, particularly against Korea DPR, who enter the competition as defending champions.

Star to watch: Oluwakemi Adegbuyi

Oluwakemi Adegbuyi of Robo Queens is one of the Flamingos players to watch at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The forward impressed at the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup, with her pace and trickery on the left flank complemented by her eyes for goals and ability to find her teammates with fine passes in the final third.

Her inclusion in head coach Akeem Busari’s 21-player squad gives Nigeria another attacking option as they seek to challenge the world’s best youth teams.

Adegbuyi will hope to make her mark against Poland, Puerto Rico and defending champions Korea DPR in Group B. The tournament offers her an opportunity to build on her regional experience while helping Nigeria pursue a place in the knockout rounds.

With the Flamingos targeting a finish beyond their historic bronze medal in 2022, the Robo Queens youngster will be eager to make her contribution in Morocco.

Flamingos’ 2026 World Cup fixtures

Nigeria have been drawn in Group B alongside Poland, Puerto Rico and Korea DPR.

Their three group-stage matches will take place at the Women’s Football Complex in Rabat.

  • Saturday, October 17: Poland vs Nigeria, 6:00 pm Nigerian time.
  • Tuesday, October 20: Nigeria vs Puerto Rico, 6:00 pm Nigerian time.
  • Friday, October 23: Nigeria vs Korea DPR, 3:00 pm Nigerian time.

All three fixtures are scheduled to take place in Rabat, giving the Flamingos the advantage of remaining at the same venue throughout the group stage.

The opening encounter against Poland will be particularly important because a positive result would give Nigeria an early platform for qualification to the knockout rounds.

Their second match against Puerto Rico could provide another opportunity to collect points before the demanding final group fixture against Korea DPR.

Who are Nigeria’s toughest opponents?

1. Korea DPR

Korea DPR represent the Flamingos’ most formidable group-stage challenge.

The reigning champions have an outstanding record in the competition and are renowned for their organised defensive structure, technical quality and ability to perform under pressure.

Nigeria will need a disciplined display to compete with the Asian side when the teams meet on October 23.

2. Poland

Poland are the Flamingos’ opening opponents and will present a difficult test.

The European side reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 edition before losing to eventual champions Korea DPR. Their physical approach and tactical organisation could make the opening encounter a closely contested affair.

An early victory would give Nigeria valuable momentum ahead of their remaining group matches.

3. Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico are the third team in Group B and offer Nigeria another opportunity to strengthen their qualification hopes.

Although the Caribbean side may have less experience at this level than Nigeria and Korea DPR, the Flamingos cannot afford to underestimate them.

Nigeria must maintain their concentration and make their attacking opportunities count if they are to secure the points needed to advance.

What is Nigeria’s best-ever U-17 Women’s World Cup finish?

Nigeria’s best performance at the tournament came in 2022, when the Flamingos finished third in India.

The team reached the semi-finals before losing to Colombia. They subsequently defeated Germany in the third-place match to claim the bronze medal.

The Flamingos will now aim to go further in Morocco and potentially challenge for their first title in the competition.

Their history of reaching the latter stages demonstrates that Nigeria have the potential to compete with leading nations, although success will depend on their performances throughout the tournament.

How does the 24-team format work?

The expanded tournament features six groups of four teams.

The top two teams in each group, together with the four best third-placed sides, advance to the newly introduced Round of 16.

That structure gives Nigeria more than one possible route into the knockout stage, but the Flamingos will still need to collect enough points and maintain a competitive goal difference.

The knockout rounds will follow the group stage, with the final scheduled for November 7.

Can the Flamingos win the 2026 World Cup?

Nigeria have the experience, regional pedigree and attacking options to make an impact in Morocco.

Their qualification victory over Benin and triumph at the WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup provide encouraging signs, while the presence of captain Harmony Chidi gives the team a focal point as they begin their campaign.

However, Poland will offer an immediate test, and the meeting with defending champions Korea DPR could prove decisive in determining Nigeria’s final group position.

The Flamingos must approach each fixture with concentration and tactical discipline if they are to turn their ambitions into tangible results.

With a place in the Round of 16 within reach, Nigeria’s first target is to negotiate Group B successfully. A strong start against Poland would put the team in a better position to pursue a second medal and possibly surpass their historic bronze-medal finish in 2022.
