Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has added another qualification to a career that has taken him from the streets of Nigeria to the Premier League, with the Coventry City forward graduating from the PFA Business School with Merit in Global Football Sport Directorship, Footynaija.com reports.
Awoniyi shared the achievement on Tuesday after completing the Postgraduate Diploma, marking another step in a journey that has seen him develop both as a footballer and away from the pitch.
At 29, the Nigerian is still very much in the middle of his playing career. He joined Coventry City from Nottingham Forest in August after four years at the City Ground, choosing to remain in the Premier League after interest from clubs outside England.

His route to this point has not been straightforward. Awoniyi emerged from Nigeria’s youth system, won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2013, and was signed by Liverpool as a teenager. He then spent several seasons developing through loan spells in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands before his move to Union Berlin became the platform for his return to England with Forest.
At Forest, he showed the qualities that had made him such a highly regarded striker. He scored six goals in four games during the club’s successful fight against relegation in 2023 and later became the first Forest player since Stan Collymore in 1995 to score in six consecutive Premier League matches.
Now, while trying to make another mark in the Premier League with Coventry, Awoniyi is also learning how football works beyond the dressing room.
Awoniyi explains what the qualification means
The PFA Business School was created to help footballers develop skills that can lead to opportunities within the game beyond their playing careers. Its programmes cover areas including club management, scouting, sport directorship, recruitment, finance and football governance.
Awoniyi said his interest in education comes from a belief that playing football should not stop a player from continuing to learn.
“Another proud moment for me off the pitch,” he wrote on X.
“Graduating from the PFA Business School with a Postgraduate Diploma in Global Football Sport Directorship with Merit.
“Still playing. Still learning. The journey continues.”
The qualification could eventually open a route into football administration or club leadership, but Awoniyi’s message is that he is not preparing to walk away from playing anytime soon.
His immediate focus remains on Coventry and his own return to form. He has made four Premier League appearances for the newly promoted side this season, scoring once and assisting once in the League Cup before his recent red card against Brighton.
