Paul Onuachu has received a positive injury update after scoring twice in Trabzonspor’s 5-0 win over Gençlerbirliği, but the Nigeria striker will still be assessed before the club’s next match, Footynaija reports.
Onuachu ended an eight-game wait for a Süper Lig goal by scoring twice in the first half on Sunday. His goals helped Trabzonspor take control of the game, but his night ended early when he was forced off in the 43rd minute.
Franculino Dju replaced him as Trabzonspor completed a comfortable victory.
Onuachu’s previous league goal had come in Trabzonspor’s 2-1 win against Galatasaray on 4 April 2026. His latest goals therefore came at an important time as he looks to regain his confidence in front of goal.
Trabzonspor manager Hüseyin Çimşir does not believe the injury is serious.
“I don’t think it’s anything serious. There’s no problem,” Çimşir said, according to Fanatik.
The coach also believes Onuachu can become even more effective if Trabzonspor supply him with more crosses.
“I tried to talk to everyone, not just Onuachu specifically. But sometimes strikers can get under pressure to score. I told him that today too. The late coach Özkan had a saying: ‘If a striker gets into a scoring position, don’t be afraid.’
“He was getting into positions, but couldn’t score. He was going to score one day, and he did today. I seriously think he contributed to this team last year as well.
“He’s one of our important players. We have this kind of weapon. I think he can score even more goals, especially when we connect him with crosses from the flanks.”
The injury will now be assessed before Trabzonspor travel to face Konyaspor.
The timing is also important for Nigeria. Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle is preparing to name his squad for this month’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Onuachu will be hoping the injury does not affect his chances of joining Nigeria for the upcoming matches.
