The Super Eagles’ goalkeeping debate is becoming one of Eric Chelle’s most interesting selection decisions, Footynaija reports.
Arthur Okonkwo has returned to the Super Eagles squad after starting his international career with two clean sheets, while Stanley Nwabali and Maduka Okoye bring much more experience at international level.
Okonkwo’s opportunity comes as Nigeria prepare for their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. The Super Eagles are in Group L with Madagascar, Tanzania and Guinea-Bissau, with the first two matchdays scheduled between September 21 and October 6.

The Charlton Athletic goalkeeper has already given Chelle something to think about. Okonkwo kept clean sheets in Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe and 3-0 win against Jamaica in May. Those performances earned him another invitation.
But Nwabali has a major advantage in competitive international football. He was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at AFCON 2025 and produced the decisive performance in the bronze-medal match against Egypt, saving penalties from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush. Okoye, meanwhile, offers European club experience and has previously been Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper.
Arthur Okonkwo: The challenger with a perfect start
Okonkwo has the smallest international résumé of the three, but his early record is difficult to ignore. The 24-year-old has two Nigeria caps and two clean sheets, giving Chelle a goalkeeper who has yet to concede for the Super Eagles.
His physical profile is another advantage. At 6ft 6in, Okonkwo can cover a large area of the goal and give defenders a tall target when Nigeria play out from the back.
His weakness is experience. He has not yet faced the pressure of an AFCON qualifier with Nigeria. That makes the September fixtures important. If he is handed a chance and he handles crosses, one-on-one situations, distribution and pressure calmly, Chelle will have a serious reason to consider him.
Stanley Nwabali: The proven Super Eagles goalkeeper
Nwabali has the strongest international case. Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice since he kept four clean sheets during the 2023 AFCON, Nwabali’s reputation grew further at AFCON 2025, when he saved two penalties against Egypt to help Nigeria win 4-2 in the shootout after a 0-0 draw in Casablanca.
That experience matters because Nigeria’s goalkeeper will face more than shots. He must organise the defence, deal with pressure and make decisions when one mistake can change a qualifier.
Nwabali therefore enters the battle with the strongest record in major international competition.
Maduka Okoye: The European-experience option
Okoye brings a different argument. The Udinese goalkeeper has already experienced high-pressure international football and was recalled to Nigeria’s squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifying play-offs. Aongside Nwabali, Okoye remains one of Nigeria’s senior goalkeeper options.
His club career in Italy also gives Chelle a goalkeeper accustomed to facing technically strong attackers every week. His distribution and ability to play from the back can fit a team that wants to build attacks through its goalkeeper.
Verdict
Nwabali gets the nod today, mainly because of his international experience and major-tournament performances. Okoye is the strongest alternative, particularly because of his European experience.
Okonkwo is the most intriguing challenger. Two games are not enough to make him No. 1, but two clean sheets give him a platform. If he performs strongly in Nigeria’s competitive AFCON qualifiers, Chelle’s goalkeeper hierarchy could change quickly.
