Brentford’s Director of Football Phil Giles has opened up on the reasons behind the London club’s decision to let go of Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka this summer, Footynaija.com reports.
Onyeka recently completed a permanent move to Coventry City after initially spending the last six months of the 2025/2026 campaign on loan at the CBS Arena and helping the Sky Blues secure automatic promotion to the Premier League by winning the EFL Championship.
That English top flight return ticket ultimately paved the way for the Nigeria international to permanently switch to Frank Lampard’s side as stipulated in his loan agreement for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Reacting to the move, Giles praised Onyeka’s commitment during his time as a Brentford player before admitting that a lack of regular starting opportunities at the Gtech Community Stadium meant the Nigerian had to move elsewhere.

“Frank has been with us since our first Premier League game, and has always shown fantastic commitment, work rate and loyalty during his time here,” he told Brentford’s official website.
“Ultimately, he probably didn’t start as many games as he’d have liked, which is why the opportunity for him to move to Coventry made sense for all parties.
“He made a big contribution to their promotion and has earned his chance at becoming a regular Premier League starter with them.
“Frank will always be welcome back at Brentford and we wish him well for next season with Coventry.”

Onyeka made 87 appearances across all competitions during his time at Brentford while also spending time away on loan at Bundesliga outfit Augsburg where he racked up 31 appearances over the course of the 2024/2025 season.
Having sorted his future, he’ll now be looking to help Coventry City get off to a strong start in the Premier League next season. Lampard’s men will face the sternest of tests as they visit champions Arsenal on opening day.
