Malawi head coach Lovemore Fazili has insisted his side will not be intimidated by reigning champions Nigeria when the two teams meet in their opening Group C fixture at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Footynaija.com reports.
The Scorchers take on the Super Falcons at the Al Madina Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday night, with Nigeria beginning their quest for a record-extending 11th continental title while Malawi prepare for their first-ever appearance at the tournament.
Despite the gulf in pedigree between both sides, Fazili believes Malawi’s difficult journey to Morocco has equipped his players with the resilience needed to compete against one of Africa’s most successful national teams.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the encounter, the Malawi tactician expressed confidence that his side can rise to the occasion after overcoming a demanding qualification campaign.
“When we qualified, it was not an easy task. We fought for it, and definitely we are going to do the same when we play Nigeria,” Fazili said, per Nyasa Times.
While the Super Falcons head into the tournament as overwhelming favourites, Malawi will be desperate to prove their credentials at this level after battling their way into the expanded 16-team competition.
Justin Madugu’s side will nevertheless be wary of the threat posed by the Scorchers, who boast the attacking talents of sisters Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga. The duo have established themselves among the finest forwards in African women’s football and are expected to spearhead Malawi’s challenge in Morocco.
Victory for Nigeria would provide the perfect start to their title defence and strengthen their bid for automatic qualification to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Malawi, meanwhile, will be hoping to pull off one of the biggest surprises of the opening round as they look to make a memorable start to their maiden appearance at the WAFCON.
