Werder Bremen Head of Professional Football Peter Niemeyer has indicated that Super Eagles defender Felix Agu is firmly in the club’s plans ahead of next season, Footynaija.com reports.
Agu struggled to stay fit during the recently concluded 2025/2026 season as multiple injury setbacks meant that he spent a large chunk of the campaign on the sidelines undergoing rehabilitation.
As a result of his frequent visits to the treatment room, the Nigeria international managed just 11 appearances for Werder Bremen across all competitions.
A syndesmosis ligament injury suffered in October kept him out of action for four months and prevented him from participating at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations with Nigeria at the turn of the year.

The 26-year-old then suffered an abductor muscle issue in February, just weeks after returning from that four-month lay-off, with that particular setback keeping him out of contention for another month.
Despite Agu’s fitness and injury problems, Werder Bremen are not looking to cut ties with the former Germany youth international with Niemeyer confirming the club’s plans to keep him at the club beyond this summer.
“We’re delighted that he can now complete a full preseason so he can finally be fit again for the upcoming season after his injuries,” Niemeyer told DeichStube.
Werder Bremen chief also addresses Felix Agu’s contract situation

Niemeyer also addressed the Super Eagles star’s current contract situation amid growing speculations about a potential departure this summer.
Agu’s current deal has just one left before expiring and talks about a potential extension surfaced during the season but with the club embroiled in a battle to retain their top flight status, the matter likely had to be tabled until the close season.
Providing an update, Niemeyer revealed that while negotiations over a possible extension have not reopened, the club is inclined towards offering the Nigerian defender fresh terms.
“There have not been any further discussions so far, but fundamentally we are open to a contract extension,” he said.
Agu is currently prioritizing rest and recovery after a tough season of fitness struggles, hence his omission from the Super Eagles squad for this month’s international break.
