Nigeria’s new Flying Eagles coach Abdul Maikaba has delivered a passionate message to football fans across the country after officially beginning life as head coach of the national U20 side, Footynaija reports.

The Nigeria Football Federation recently confirmed the appointment of the experienced tactician following approval from the NFF Executive Committee, handing him one of the most demanding roles in Nigerian football ahead of a crucial WAFU B U20 Championship campaign in July.

Maikaba, who replaces Aliyu Zubairu, is no stranger to the pressure that comes with coaching in Nigeria. The 59-year-old has managed several major Nigeria Premier Football League clubs including Enyimba FC, Kano Pillars, Plateau United, Rangers International and Wikki Tourists. He also guided Akwa United to Federation Cup success in 2017.

The former university lecturer has also worked within Nigeria’s youth national-team structure, serving as head coach of the Golden Eaglets and later as assistant coach of the Flying Eagles under Paul Aigbogun.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his appointment, Maikaba used his X account to present his ambitions and rally support from Nigerians.

“I am deeply honored for this role as Head Coach of the Nigeria U-20 Flying Eagles,” Maikaba wrote.

“To lead this team is a massive responsibility and a privilege I do not take lightly. Nigeria’s football history is built on passion, grit, and talent.

“We are ready to write the next chapter. The challenges before us are great, but our determination is greater. The work starts immediately, nurturing Nigeria’s finest young talents and creating a winning culture. Making millions of Nigerians proud on the global stage.

“Thank you to the NFF for this trust, and to all Nigerians for your unstoppable energy. Together, we soar.”

His immediate attention turns to the WAFU B U20 Championship in Côte d’Ivoire, a competition that doubles as qualification for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations.

Nigeria Flying Eagles begin preparations for the WAFU B U-20 Championship as Head Coach Abdu Maikaba invites 35 players to camp.

Preparations are already underway in Abuja, where Maikaba has opened camp with a 35-man provisional squad dominated by home-based players. The squad includes Sporting Lagos goalkeeper Clinton Lawani and Spain-based defender Wahab Bolanle Musa of FC Malaga.

With expectations traditionally high around the Flying Eagles, Maikaba’s first few weeks in charge could shape Nigeria’s hopes of returning to the top of African youth football.
