Super Eagles trio could suffer major blow as Marco Silva nears Benfica switch

Marco Silva is reportedly edging closer to a summer move to Benfica, a development that could significantly affect the futures of Fulham’s Nigerian stars Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze, Footynaija reports.

Portuguese reports claim Benfica have identified Silva as the leading candidate to oversee a new era at the Estádio da Luz after growing uncertainty surrounding the future of José Mourinho. Silva’s close relationship with Benfica director-general Mário Branco is also believed to have accelerated negotiations between both parties.

The 48-year-old has transformed Fulham since arriving at Craven Cottage five years ago. After guiding the club back into the Premier League, he established the London side as consistent top-flight competitors with stable mid-table finishes and a far stronger identity both tactically and structurally.

🚨 BREAKING

🦅 🔴 Marco Silva is set to become the new head coach of SL Benfica!

However, Silva is now thought to be frustrated by Fulham’s cautious transfer approach despite attempts from the club’s hierarchy to convince him to stay with a new long-term contract. Sunday’s home game against Newcastle United could therefore become his farewell appearance in charge.

However, Silva’s expected departure may represent a major turning point for Nigeria internationals Iwobi, Bassey, and Chukwueze. Few players have benefited more from the Portuguese coach than Iwobi, who rediscovered his best form under a manager that consistently trusted his intelligence and versatility.

Rather than using him strictly as a winger, Silva repositioned the midfielder into a more central role where his movement, creativity and work rate became central to Fulham’s attacking transitions.

Iwobi responded with some of his most consistent football in England, contributing goals, assists and a strong passing record while becoming one of Fulham’s key creative outlets. The fear now is that a new manager may not build the same tactical structure around his strengths.

Bassey has also flourished under Silva after arriving from Ajax with questions surrounding his consistency. The Nigerian defender has since developed into one of Fulham’s most reliable performers, using his recovery pace and physicality to become a cornerstone of the club’s defensive organisation.

Meanwhile, Chukwueze’s future appears even less certain. The winger joined Fulham on loan from AC Milan largely because Silva personally pushed for the move. Fulham had been discussing a permanent transfer worth around €24 million, but Silva’s likely exit could now complicate those negotiations and leave the Nigerian facing a possible return to Italy.
