Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has applauded Ademola Lookman after the forward produced a standout display in his side’s 3-2 defeat by Real Madrid in the Madrid derby, Footynaija reports.
Lookman was one of Atlético’s brightest performers on the night, scoring the opening goal and leading the attack with confidence during the first half at the Santiago Bernabéu. The Nigerian forward played 57 minutes, completed 17 passes with an accuracy of around 85%, and constantly troubled the opposition with his direct running and movement.
After the match, Simeone highlighted the forward’s steady improvement and his growing role within the team. The Atletico boss also pointed at Lookman’s attitude to learning among the things he found ‘fantastic’ about the Nigerian.
“Lookman is growing, working very well, giving us different things in attack, and we need him that way,” the Argentine tactician noted as per El Pais.
“We’re also helping him grow defensively so he can contribute that too, which he’s capable of. He’s a kid with a huge heart and an incredible willingness to learn and improve. That’s fantastic. Hopefully, he’ll continue to give us important things.”

Lookman’s defining contribution came in the 33rd minute when he finished a swift counter-attack following a clever back-heel assist from Giuliano Simeone. The goal not only handed Atlético the lead but also secured his place in history, making him the first Nigerian to score in a Madrid derby.
Despite Atlético taking a 1-0 advantage into the break, the second half saw a shift in momentum. Vinícius Júnior inspired Real Madrid’s comeback as the hosts scored three times to claim victory. Simeone reshuffled his side in the 57th minute, withdrawing Lookman and Antoine Griezmann, but Atlético were unable to regain control.
