Panathinaikos center forward Cyriel Dessers has declared that he’ll be cheering the Super Eagles on at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco after being ruled out of the tournament through injury, Footynaija.com reports.
Dessers sustained the injury during a Super Eagles training session on the eve of their final game in Group C against the Cranes of Uganda.
Medical evaluations later revealed he would be out for up to 12 weeks, prompting a decision to send him back to his club to focus on recovery and ruling him out for the rest of the tournament.
A few days after the confirmation of his unfortunate situation, the 31-year-old has broken silence on the injury setback that will now keep him out of action for both club and country.
In a recent social media post, Dessers expressed his frustrations with injury setback before promising to be Nigeria’s “biggest fan” for the remainder of the tournament.

“Unfortunately I sustained an injury at AFCON. It’s extremely difficult to accept that I will miss the remainder of the tournament and an important period at Panathinaikos,” the striker wrote.
“I will be our biggest fan in these weeks, go full in rehab and hopefully we can celebrate a win and goal together soon.”
While Dessers’ setback is a disappointment, Eric Chelle’s robust squad and the Super Eagles’ scintillating form at the Africa Cup of Nations so far means that the absence of the former Rangers man has hardly been felt.
Chelle still has the likes of Victor Osimhen, Akor Adams and Paul Onuachu at his disposal when it comes to striking options. Barring any unforeseen incidents, it’s safe to say that the Super Eagles have nothing to worry about heading into their quarterfinals against Algeria.
