Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has confirmed a familiar and trusted starting eleven for Saturday’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final showdown against Algeria, sticking with the same side that has steadily grown into the tournament in Morocco, footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles face one of the competition’s toughest defensive teams in a match that carries the weight of history and expectation.
With Algeria having conceded just once so far and Nigeria building momentum game by game, fine margins are expected to decide a contest many see as worthy of a final.
In goal, Stanley Nwabali keeps his place after another assured performance last time out. The defensive line also remains untouched, with Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi continuing their partnership at centre-back, flanked by Bruno Onyemaechi and Bright Osayi-Samuel. Both full-backs will be tested severely by Algeria’s wide threats, especially Riyad Mahrez and the lively Mohamed Amoura.
Chelle has again opted for muscle and control in midfield. Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka will focus on screening the defence and winning second balls, while Alex Iwobi is expected to provide the link between midfield and attack with his passing and movement.
Up front, Nigeria’s attacking responsibility rests on the familiar trio of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams. The three have provided pace, direct running and goals throughout the tournament and will need to be sharp against an Algerian side that rarely gives opponents space.
Nigeria, though, will be bouyed by their record of being the highest-scoring team in Morocco, their 12 goals unmatched by any other team at the tournament.
Kick off is set for 5pm Nigeria time.
