Nigeria’s Super Eagles will head into their Africa Cup of Nations last-16 tie against Mozambique with a significant financial incentive attached to every goal they score, Footynaija.com reports.

Players have been promised a $10,000 bonus per goal for Monday night’s knockout match in Fez, Morocco — a reward worth about ₦14m — as efforts intensify to push the team deep into the tournament. The offer has been put forward by a Nigerian businessman and official team partner, according to reports.

The bonus marks a sharp increase from the group stage, where the squad received $5,000 for each goal. Nigeria responded by scoring eight times across three matches, finishing the first round with growing attacking confidence.

Confirming the incentive in Rabat, National Sports Commission chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko said the government and private partners were fully aligned behind the team’s campaign.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he explained, had approved an AFCON intervention fund late last year, while sponsors have committed to increasing rewards as Nigeria progress through the competition.

“The incentives will keep improving as the tournament goes on,” Dikko said, adding that the aim was to provide the players with the right support to succeed.

Nigeria face a Mozambique side they have never lost to, winning three previous AFCON meetings and edging a 3-2 friendly in October 2023. But with knockout football offering little margin for error, head coach Eric Chelle has stressed focus and discipline over past records.

Kick-off is at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) on Monday.
