Victor Osimhen has made history by becoming the first Nigerian to win GQ Türkiye’s Sportsman of the Year Award, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles star received the honour on Wednesday night in Istanbul, following a year of exceptional performances with Galatasaray.
Osimhen arrived at the Turkish giants on loan at the start of the 2024–25 season but wasted no time establishing himself as the driving force behind their success. He scored 37 goals and delivered seven assists last season, guiding the club to both the Super Lig title and the Turkish Cup. His impact prompted Galatasaray to sign him permanently in a record-breaking move.
This season, he has continued in similar fashion, scoring 11 goals in 14 matches as Galatasaray push for another league crown. His consistency, intensity, and leadership have earned him widespread admiration among fans and analysts.
Only two footballers, Wesley Sneijder (2016) and Mauro Icardi (2023), have won the GQ Türkiye Sportsman award in the past decade. Osimhen now becomes the third.
Reacting to the honour, he said: “I want to say a big thank you to GQ. Can’t forget my Galatasaray family… I will continue to do my best for my family, for Galatasaray, for the fans all over the world.”
Osimhen’s latest accolade adds to a decorated career that already includes African Footballer of the Year, a Serie A title, multiple Golden Boots, and a top-10 finish in the Ballon d’Or. His rise continues to elevate both Galatasaray and Nigerian football.
