Tanzania head coach Manuel Gomandi has praised his players after their spirited display against Nigeria, despite beginning their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations campaign with a 2–1 defeat in Group C, Footynaija.com reports.
The Taifa Stars were tipped by many to sit deep against the three-time champions, but instead produced a bold and organised performance that troubled the Super Eagles for long spells at the Complexe Sportif de Fès.
Nigeria took the lead in the 36th minute when Semi Ajayi headed home Alex Iwobi’s corner. Tanzania responded strongly after the break and were rewarded when Charles M’Mombwa finished calmly to equalise after beating the offside trap.
Ademola Lookman restored Nigeria’s lead minutes later with a fine left-footed strike, ensuring the Super Eagles secured a winning start to their AFCON campaign.
Speaking after the match, Gomandi said:
“The performance of my players was great even though we committed the mistake from the corner where we conceded the first goal.
“But when you see the gap, the quality and value of one team compared to the other team, how we applied the game in terms of the tactical issues, how we tried to reduce the space, everything was great.
“I think we surprised so many people because they thought we will come here to pack the bus which is not my philosophy.”
The victory moves Nigeria top of Group C alongside Tunisia, while Tanzania will look to build on their encouraging display when they face Uganda next.
