A major European transfer race is underway for Nigerian defender Chibuike Nwaiwu, with PSG, Bayer Leverkusen and Leeds United among several clubs competing for his signature, Footynaija.com reports.
The 22-year-old has become one of the Austrian Bundesliga’s most highly rated young defenders after a strong run of performances for Wolfsberger AC.
French outlet Top Mercato reports that PSG, Marseille, Lille, Lens and Strasbourg have all submitted enquiries for Nwaiwu, who can play both centre-back and defensive midfield.
Leverkusen and Leeds have also expressed interest, making him one of the most sought-after defensive prospects ahead of the winter transfer window.
Nwaiwu joined Wolfsberger AC in early 2024 after spells at Enyimba and Heartland in Nigeria. He quickly settled in Austria, helping his new club win the Austrian Cup. He has now played nearly 50 matches, contributing five goals and displaying the power, aerial dominance and positional intelligence that have impressed scouts across Europe.
Standing at 1.93m, Nwaiwu is valued at €7 million but is expected to command a higher fee due to the calibre of clubs involved. Leeds view him as a potential long-term solution in defence, despite initially prioritising attacking signings. PSG, meanwhile, are exploring future options as Marquinhos enters his 30s and Lucas Beraldo continues to attract interest.
With enquiries coming from England, France and Germany, Nwaiwu’s next move looks increasingly likely to be one that elevates him onto a much larger stage.
