Tunisia climbed to the top of Group C at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations after a dominant 3-0 win over Uganda, overtaking Nigeria just hours after the Super Eagles had begun their campaign with victory, Footynaija.com reports.
Nigeria had earlier secured a 2-1 win against Tanzania at the Fez Stadium to provisionally lead the group. Semi Ajayi opened the scoring midway through the second half, heading in from close range after an assist from the excellent Alex Iwobi.
Tanzania briefly threatened an upset when Charles M’Mombwa equalised shortly after the restart, but Nigeria responded immediately.
Ademola Lookman restored the Super Eagles’ lead just two minutes later, firing home from the edge of the box after another smart pass from Iwobi.
The win handed Nigeria three points on matchday one, but their stay at the top was short-lived.
Tunisia were ruthless against Uganda, scoring three times without reply at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Olympic Annex Stadium.
Ellyes Skhiri opened the scoring in the 10th minute following a pass from Hannibal Mejbri, before Elias Achouri doubled the lead just before half-time. Achouri added his second in the 64th minute to complete a comfortable victory.
Uganda’s consolation goal arrived in stoppage time off the boots of Denis Omedi.
The result sent Tunisia above Nigeria on goal difference, setting up a decisive clash between the two sides on matchday two, with a place in the knockout rounds at stake.
Elsewhere, Senegal recorded a 3-0 win over Botswana in Group D, while DR Congo edged Benin 1-0.
Morocco lead Group A following their opening day win over Comoros while Mali and Zambia settled for a 1-1 draw.
In Group B, Egypt and South Africa share top spot after similar 2-1 victories against Zimbabwe and Angola, respectively.
