Spain have won the race to secure the international future of in-form striker Edna Imade, dealing Nigeria a significant blow in their efforts to strengthen the Super Falcons’ attack ahead of next year’s WAFCON, Footynaija.com reports.

Imade, born to Nigerian parents and raised in Spain, had been on Nigeria’s radar for more than a year.

She narrowly missed out on selection for the WAFCON earlier in the year, with head coach Justine Madugu confirming he intended to integrate her into the squad afterward. At the time, Nigeria appeared to be in a strong position, especially as the forward did not yet hold a Spanish passport.

However, Spain accelerated their pursuit in recent months, clearing the bureaucratic hurdles that previously stood in the way.

Their efforts have culminated in Imade’s inclusion in Spain’s 25-woman squad for the UEFA Women’s Nations League final.

The 25-year-old has been one of Liga F’s standout performers this season, scoring seven goals in eight matches for Real Sociedad.

Her rise has been steady and impressive: five league goals in her debut campaign, 16 last season, and a summer move to Bayern Munich, who immediately loaned her to Sociedad ahead of a permanent return in 2026.

Nigeria will feel the loss, particularly with WAFCON and World Cup qualification around the corner, but Madugu still has a strong pool of forwards, including Gift Monday, Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and emerging talent Joy Omewa.

Imade, meanwhile, now looks set to continue her ascent in Spanish colours.
