DR Congo technical staff member Dodo Landu has denied allegations by Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle that his team used voodoo during the 2026 World Cup playoff shootout, insisting Chelle misunderstood his actions, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles began the match in Rabat with energy and intent, taking an early lead in the third minute through Frank Onyeka. The early goal ignited hope among players and fans that Nigeria could secure World Cup qualification.
DR Congo fought back in the 32nd minute when Meschak Elia capitalised on a turnover by Alex Iwobi to level the score. Both teams battled through the second half and extra time, but neither could find a winner. The match ended 1–1, sending the tie to a penalty shootout and ending Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup hopes after a heartbreaking 4–3 defeat on penalties.
The penalty shootout proved disastrous for the Super Eagles. Calvin Bassey and Moses Simon missed their attempts, while Semi Ajayi’s strike was saved. DR Congo held their composure, with Chancel Mbemba converting the decisive penalty.
Following the shootout, Chelle claimed that DR Congo staff performed gestures he interpreted as voodoo aimed at unsettling his players.
As revealed in an earlier report, Eric Chelle was visibly frustrated and convinced that the actions had a psychological impact during the penalties.
DR Congo head coach Landu has addressed the issue. According to a report by Pulse Sports, he said: “During Chancel’s penalty kick, I was praying for him to score. Immediately, the Nigerian coach thought I was performing voodoo.”
