Paul Onuachu’s blistering start to life in Turkey has brought him individual recognition, but it has also sharpened debate over his continued omission from the Nigeria squad, Footynaija.com reports.
The 30-year-old striker, who left Southampton for Trabzonspor in the summer, has scooped the Turkish Super Lig Goal of the Month award for August. His towering header in the 1-1 draw with Samsunspor edged out other contenders, rewarding a player who has not only scored consistently but done so with real flair.

Onuachu has already struck six times in eight games this season, placing him top of the Turkish scoring charts ahead of Galatasaray’s Mauro Icardi. His latest outing showed his influence once more, with a goal and an assist in Trabzonspor’s 4-0 demolition of Kayserispor on Friday.
Yet while his stock soars in Turkey, his international career remains in limbo.
Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle has again overlooked Onuachu for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin, opting instead for Akor Adams and Cyriel Dessers – both far less prolific so far this season.
For Onuachu, the snub is nothing new. He has just three goals in 23 caps and has not featured since Nigeria’s defeat to Benin in June 2024. But given his current form, Chelle’s decision looks increasingly difficult to defend.
With Nigeria chasing a place at the 2026 World Cup, leaving out the most in-form Nigerian striker in Europe is a gamble that may yet come to bite the Malian tactician.
