When Germany released their latest national team list, Noah Atubolu’s name brought both pride and pain for different reasons, as the young goalkeeper finally received his first senior call-up for the European giants, Footynaija.com reports.
As revealed in a report by Daily Sports, the 23-year-old SC Freiburg goalkeeper was included in the squad, potentially ending the hopes of him ever representing the Super Eagles of Nigeria.
Born to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Atubolu’s rise has been nothing short of impressive. From his early days in Freiburg’s academy to becoming the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, he has shown confidence, maturity and technical discipline that have set him apart.
His inclusion shows how much the German Football Federation believe in his potential. With Manuel Neuer nearing the end of an iconic career and Marc-André ter Stegen already in his thirties, Germany are clearly looking ahead.
For them, it’s a step toward the future. But for Nigeria, which has had him on their radar for a while now, it’s a reminder of yet another player who could have strengthened the Super Eagles but wasn’t tied down early enough.
The Super Eagles might have missed out on a world-class goalkeeping talent
To understand what Nigeria might have lost, it only takes a few minutes of watching Atubolu in action. At just 23, he already commands his box with confidence and authority.
Several German reports and interviews have drawn links between Atubolu’s progress and the early days of Manuel Neuer at Schalke, with the young Freiburg keeper even admitting that such comparisons once created heavy expectations for him.
His rise has followed a familiar path seen in other prodigies like Gianluigi Donnarumma, who broke into AC Milan’s senior team as a teenager and quickly became one of Europe’s best.
For Nigeria, this story feels familiar. The Super Eagles have long searched for consistency in goal, with Francis Uzoho and Stanley Nwabali showing flashes of ability but never quite locking down the position long term.
Atubolu, trained in Germany’s modern goalkeeping system, represents exactly the kind of player Nigeria could have built around for years.
If Atubolu eventually plays in an official match for Germany, he will no longer be eligible to switch to Nigeria under FIFA rules. That would end any remaining hope of seeing him represent the country of his father.
