Nigeria’s hopes of securing a ticket to the 2026 FIFA World Cup have received a significant boost after South Africa were hit by a major setback on the eve of their crucial qualifier against Rwanda, Footynaija.com reports.
While there is never joy in celebrating a rival’s misfortune, the Super Eagles will welcome any advantage as they continue their fight for the Group C automatic qualification spot.
Nigeria, South Africa, and Benin Republic remain locked in a tense three-way battle.

Benin top the group with 17 points, while South Africa sit second with 15 and Nigeria follow closely in third with 14.
The Super Eagles host Benin in Uyo at 5pm on Tuesday, the same time South Africa face Rwanda in Mbombela. Nigeria need a convincing win and must also hope the Bafana Bafana drop points to have a real shot at qualification.
Burnley’s Foster withdrawn, Cupido called up
South Africa’s preparations suffered a major blow after star striker Lyle Foster was ruled out with an injury.
On their official X page, the South African Football Association announced:
“Lyle Foster has been withdrawn from the Bafana Bafana matchday squad due to an injury. After consultation with the medical team, a decision was taken to withdraw him. Ashley Cupido has been called up as his replacement.”

Foster, 25, has been pivotal in South Africa’s campaign, scoring twice and providing an assist in five qualifiers. The Burnley forward has also contributed a goal and an assist in seven Premier League appearances this season.
Cupido, his replacement, currently plays for Stellenbosch in the South African Premier Division.
Despite the development, Nigeria must focus on their own performance in Uyo. For the Super Eagles, nothing less than victory will keep their World Cup dream alive.
