5. Super performance from the Super Eagles

Nigeria’s qualification campaign before today’s game had been characterized by inconsistent performances and disappointing results. However, Eric Chelle’s men reminded everyone of just how good they can be when they operate at their absolute best.

They dominated their West African counterparts from the first to the last whistle, and got a result to match their commanding performance.

4. Eric Chelle’s bold team selection paid off

Eric Chelle made four changes to the Super Eagles side that took on Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane last week.

Zaidu Sanusi, Semi Ajayi, Akor Adams and Samuel Chukwueze replaced Bruno Onyemaechi, William Troost-Ekong, Tolu Arokodare and Ademola Lookman respectively and these changes paid off tremendously.

Adams linked up nicely with the rest of the Super Eagles attack while Chukwueze played a decisive role in the first half with two assists to his name.

3. Early goal proved crucial for Nigeria

The Super Eagles broke the deadlock as early as the third minute after Chukwueze and Osimhen combined to lethally punish Benin’s high defensive line.

That goal served to calm the nerves of the Nigerians and provided a great platform for them to settle down and dictate the pace and rhythm of the entire match.

2. Clutch Victor Osimhen

Osimhen once again showed why he’s regarded as Nigeria’s most important player with his hattrick in Uyo sending the Super Eagles on their way to a convincing victory.

Beyond the goals, his overall involvement in build up and even defense was just a joy to watch. If any player deserves a World Cup experience, it’s this man.

1. No automatic ticket for Nigeria but qualification hopes still alive

Despite Nigeria’s huge win over Benin Republic, South Africa’s victory over Rwanda in Group C’s other game means Bafana Bafana have clinched automatic qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

However, the Super Eagles’ effort in Uyo wasn’t for nothing. After winning with a four-goal margin on Tuesday, Eric Chelle’s men have positioned themselves among one of the four best second-placed teams of the qualifying campaign.

What this means is that Nigeria will now have to fight their way through a playoff showdown with the other best second-placed teams for a chance to clinch a World Cup ticket.
