The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has assured that the Super Eagles will play a match in Oyo State before the end of the current administration in 2027, Footynaija.com reports.
Gusau made this declaration during the formal opening of the 81st Annual General Assembly of the NFF, which took place on Saturday in Ibadan. The event turned into a celebration of Oyo State’s growing role in Nigerian football, with both the NFF boss and Governor Seyi Makinde trading words of commitment to the game.
In his speech, Gusau praised Governor Makinde for what he described as “consistent support” for sports development. He noted that the Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, has undergone major renovation and now stands as one of the most improved football grounds in the country.
“We appreciate your contributions to football and sports,” Gusau told the governor, as revealed in a report by Vanguard.
“I assure you that before 2027, a Nigerian national team match will be hosted here in recognition of your consistent support.”
The Lekan Salami Stadium, first opened in 1988, has recently been transformed under Governor Makinde. With new floodlights, a natural grass pitch, electronic scoreboards, improved dressing rooms and a modern media centre, the stadium is now back in the conversation as a potential host for Grade A matches.
Governor Makinde in turn said his administration is ready to provide all the infrastructure and backing needed to welcome the Super Eagles.
This is not the first time Ibadan has been linked to a possible Super Eagles game. In past years, the Oyo State Government had pushed for CAF and FIFA approval for the Adamasingba complex after its extensive facelift.
