Umar Sadiq‘s troubled spell at Real Sociedad has taken another turn, with the Nigerian forward facing a race against time to be fit for Saturday’s La Liga showdown with Real Madrid, Footynaija.com reports.
The Super Eagles striker, who returned to San Sebastián after a mixed loan stint at Valencia, has been training at reduced intensity due to discomfort, according to Mundo Deportivo.
That has left his availability in serious doubt for the visit of Xabi Alonso’s side.
Sadiq’s situation at Sociedad has been complicated for months.
The 27-year-old was told he was free to leave earlier in the summer, but a permanent exit never materialised before the transfer deadline.
Valencia had been keen to bring him back after he scored five times in 16 appearances during the second half of last season, playing a crucial role in their survival battle.
With the window now shut, Sadiq has been reinstated to the first-team squad and handed a shirt number. Yet his hopes of relaunching his career under new coach Sergio Francisco have been immediately stalled by fitness issues.
He is not the only concern for Sociedad ahead of the clash with Madrid, with Yangel Herrera and Jon Magunazelaia Óskarsson also nursing knocks.
For Sadiq, however, the timing could hardly be worse. Still trying to convince the club he deserves a long-term future, missing a marquee fixture against the Spanish champions would be a significant setback.
