Super Eagles’ Ademola Lookman risks demotion, fines, and more over Atalanta strike

Ademola Lookman’s transfer saga at Atalanta has escalated into a full-blown standoff, with the Nigerian forward facing the threat of fines, wage suspension, and possible demotion after refusing to attend training in protest over a blocked move, Footynaija.com reports.

Lookman, who scored 20 goals in all competitions last season, had formally requested to leave Atalanta this summer, with Inter Milan his preferred destination. However, Atalanta rejected multiple bids from the Nerazzurri, including an offer reported to be in the region of €45 million, holding out for around €50 million.

The club’s stance has triggered a dramatic fallout, with Lookman reportedly clearing out his locker and leaving Italy altogether.

As revealed in a report by Football Italia, Atalanta are now exploring several disciplinary measures. These include suspending his wages under Serie A regulations, issuing heavy fines for missed training sessions, and even relegating him to the reserves if the dispute drags on.

In addition, the club could seek legal recourse through Italian football authorities or FIFA, a move that would escalate the row further.

The winger’s camp is believed to be weighing legal options to secure an exit, potentially invoking precedents from past high-profile disputes between players and clubs. However, such a move would be complex given his contract, which runs until June 2027, and Atalanta’s strong legal position.

As the stalemate deepens, Inter remain interested, but Atalanta’s refusal to sell to a Serie A rival leaves the player’s future in limbo. Arsenal have also been linked, yet Lookman’s priority remains a switch to the San Siro.
