Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba has advised Ademola Lookman to return to Atalanta training amid ongoing transfer tensions with the Italian club, Footynaija.com reports.

Lookman, who starred in Atalanta’s historic Europa League triumph last year, has been pushing for a move away from Bergamo this summer.

The 26-year-old has been linked with Arsenal and Napoli, but Inter Milan are thought to be leading the chase after tabling two bids worth around €45m, both rejected by Atalanta.

The Nigerian forward has since handed in a transfer request and skipped several training sessions, also missing the club’s last two pre-season friendlies. Despite his stance, Atalanta have made it clear they will only sanction his departure on their own terms.

Ikpeba, speaking to Brila, urged the player to adopt a calmer approach.

“These things happen in football,”
Ikpeba said. “At the end of the day, the clubs own the players — they call the shots.

“Lookman and Atalanta had a beautiful relationship. They won a trophy, and he was crowned African Player of the Year. But like in life, some marriages end badly.

“I don’t know the full story, but I believe his representatives and close circle should advise him to stay calm and handle things properly. He should not stop training. It’s always better to part ways on good terms to maintain relationship. He’s already a legend at Atalanta.”

Lookman’s reputation in Bergamo remains high after his standout performance in the Europa League final, where his hat-trick secured Atalanta’s first-ever European title.

Despite growing interest across Europe, Atalanta maintain they hold the final say on the winger’s future.
