Getafe manager José Bordalás has voiced his strong opposition to Christantus Uche’s looming transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers, Footynaija.com reports.
Bordalás has described the midfielder’s potential departure as a “very serious problem” for the Spanish side.
Despite being at the centre of transfer talks, Uche featured from the start in Getafe’s 2-1 victory over Sevilla on Monday, completing the full match while carrying a minor knock.
The Super Eagles star is close to joining Wolves in a deal worth just under €20m while AC Milan are reportedly making a late attempt to hijack the transfer.
The Premier League appears to be Uche’s next destination, though, as Wolves are preparing to offer the 22-year-old Nigerian a five-year contract.
Speaking after the match at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, Bordalás said: “Let’s hope he doesn’t leave. I’m against him leaving; he’s a very important player, and this becomes more difficult every day. We can’t start from scratch every season, without knowing the squad we’ll have. If Uche leaves, we have a very serious problem. I understand the situation, but we can’t be at the mercy of selling a player as important as Uche.”
Getafe had originally planned to retain Uche for another season despite growing interest from clubs in Italy and England.
However, La Liga’s strict financial regulations have forced the club to adjust their plans. Club president Ángel Torres confirmed that the sale was being sanctioned to comply with registration rules, despite the manager’s reluctance.
Uche has been one of Getafe’s standout performers over the past year, contributing five goals and seven assists across 35 La Liga appearances.
