Nigeria’s Super Falcons advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as Group B winners despite being held to a goalless draw by a determined Algeria side in Casablanca on Sunday night, Footynaija.com reports.

Justin Madugu’s team had already secured qualification with wins over Tunisia and Botswana, but were keen to finish strong.

However, with eight changes to the starting XI— including WAFCON debuts for three players — the Falcons struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

From the outset, Nigeria asserted control, creating a flurry of chances in the opening 30 minutes.

Chinwendu Ihezuo led the line with intensity, and the attacking trio of Ifeoma Onumonu, Jennifer Echegini, and Francisca Ordega kept the Algerian defence on high alert.

But Algeria’s goalkeeper delivered a heroic performance, denying the Super Falcons time and again.

A penalty shout was waved away early in the second half when Rasheedat Ajibade appeared to be clipped in the box.

Substitutions followed, with Esther Okoronkwo, Folashade Ijamilusi, and Rinsola Babajide all introduced as Nigeria pressed for a late winner. Despite their relentless push, the North Africans held firm.

Nigeria finish Group B unbeaten and without conceding a goal. With seven points from three games, they now prepare for a tantalising quarter-final showdown against Zambia.

Zambia finished as Group A runners-up, are yet to lose a game and boast the most potent attack force at the WAFCON.
