Henry Onyekuru is poised to return to familiar territory in Turkey as the Nigerian international prepares to undergo a medical with Gençlerbirliği on Monday, Footynaija.com reports.
The 27-year-old winger has reached an agreement with the newly promoted Ankara-based club, who are making their return to the Turkish Super Lig after a three-year absence. Gençlerbirliği see Onyekuru’s arrival as a major boost to their attacking options ahead of the 2024/25 season.
According to Turkish outlet Fanatik, Onyekuru has agreed personal terms and is expected in Turkey early in the week to complete medical checks before finalising his transfer. The move comes after an injury-hit campaign with Saudi side Al Fayha, where the former Everton player featured only four times without scoring.
Despite recent struggles, Onyekuru, one of the finest Nigerian footballers in the history of Galatasaray, remains a proven talent in Turkish football. He enjoyed a productive spell at Galatasaray across three loan stints, tallying 22 goals and 12 assists in 71 matches. He later joined Adana Demirspor, initially on loan from Olympiacos, before the deal became permanent.
Gençlerbirliği, who are also closing in on the signing of fellow Super Eagles star Oghenekaro Etebo, hope to complete both deals in time for preseason preparations.
Besiktas and Antalyaspor were previously linked with the former Monaco man, but Gençlerbirliği have moved quickly to secure his signature.
Onyekuru’s imminent return to the Super Lig comes just hours after Victor Osimhen sealed a record-breaking €75 million switch to Galatasaray, setting up a thrilling season for Nigerian fans, who will now see two Super Eagles attackers lighting up Turkish football once again.
