Super Falcons legend Onome Ebi has declared Ashleigh Plumptre as the perfect player to take over her iconic number 5 jersey in the national team, Footynaija.com reports.

The 42-year-old former captain, who holds the record for most World Cup appearances by any African player, made the statement in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Her message comes at a time when Nigeria are fresh off a dominant 5–0 win over Zambia in the quarter-finals and are preparing for a crucial semi-final clash against South Africa at the ongoing WAFCON.

Plumptre has played a key role in the tournament, helping shut out opponents and leading the Super Falconsʼ backline with authority. Her performances are a major reason Nigeria have yet to concede a goal. Against that backdrop, Ebi has shared her tribute, describing Plumptre as not just a worthy successor, but one who shares a deeper bond with her beyond football.

“Best replacement for my #5 jersey, which means a lot to me after 20 years.” she wrote.

“Same birthday 8 May, just a name change from Ebi to Plumptre. The energy, discipline, consistency, and dedication are almost the same. I am proud . The Legacy continues,” she continued.

Plumptre responded by reposting the tribute, writing:

“Grateful! Thank you for the legacy you led and continue to leave.”

Ebi, who has played for the Super Falcons for more than 20 years, is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s greatest-ever defenders. She featured in six FIFA Women’s World Cups and won multiple WAFCON titles. Her leadership and longevity have made the number 5 shirt a symbol of discipline and strength in the team.

Plumptre, 27, joined the Super Falcons in 2022 after switching allegiance from England. She previously played for Leicester City before moving to Al-Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.
