Former Nigeria national team captain Sunday Oliseh, earlier today via his social media (X) account paid an emotional tribute to Peter Rufai, following the death of the former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Footynaija.com reports.
The news of Peter Rufai’s death, which was made public yesterday, June 3, 2025 left a bad taste in the mouth of many Nigerian football fans with tributes to the former goalkeeper pouring in from all over the globe.
Reacting to the tragic event, Oliseh, who shared the Super Eagles dressing room with Peter Rufai for five years between 1993 and 1998 took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his sadness over the passing of his former teammate.

“Yesterday we lost a gigantic legend, my teammate, roommate and a friend, Peter Rufai,” the former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund midfielder’s post on his official X account began.

During a professional career that spanned over 20 years, the Nigerian shot-stopper enjoyed a stints at Lokeren and Beveren in Belgium, Go Ahead Eagles in the Netherlands, Farense and Gil Vicente in Portugal as well as Spanish sides Hercules CF and Deportivo La Coruna.

In Nigeria’s national team colours, Peter Rufai earned 65 caps and played a pivotal role for the Super Eagles as he featured in two FIFA World Cups and helped Nigeria to win the 1994 AFCON in Tunisia. Till today, he remains the only goalkeeper in Super Eagles history with an international goal.
