Super Falcons head coach Justin Madugu acknowledged the difficulties faced by his team during their gritty 1-0 victory over minnows Botswana at the ongoing Women’s African Cup of Nations on Thursday night, Footynaija.com reports.

Nigeria had troubles breaking down Botswana’s low-block in their second group game of the tournament, failing to register a shot on target in the first half. A second half triple substitution of Esther Okonkwo, Christy Ucheibe and Chinwendu Ihezuo in place of Asisat Oshoala, Toni Payne and Omorinsola Babajide tilted the game in Nigeria’s favour.

A much more improved second half display saw the Falcons eventually snatch a late winner thanks to the combination of Okoronkwo and Ihezuo. After the game, Madugu admitted it had been a tough encounter and commended Botswana for their resilience.

Everything Justin Madugu said after the game

“It was a tough and highly competitive game. The Botswana girls were very spirited and determined. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Madugu told reporters after the game.

“Every game has its own strategy. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. That’s why we make changes when things aren’t working. Not every player will have a good day, but we got better in the second half and converted one of our chances.”

Looking ahead to the Super Falcons’ final group stage match against Algeria, Madugu confirmed the possibility of a heavy rotation with his team’s quarterfinals slot already booked: “It is always a work in progress. Even if we score 10 goals, there will still be things to improve.

“We’ll definitely make some changes in the last game against Algeria. Not because we’re fielding a weaker team — all our players are capable — but because we need to manage the squad carefully, knowing we have up to six games to play in this tournament. It’s important to rest some players and give others opportunities.”

The Super Falcons will be without crucial midfielder Deborah Abiodun for their final group game due to suspension for accumulation of yellow cards. The match official erroneously booked Abiodun, but Madugu chose not to criticize the decision.

“We are aware Deborah has two yellow cards and won’t play the next match. But that gives others a chance to step in and show what they can do. You can’t be the best without beating the best,” he said.

“It’s all part of the process, it’s not for us to judge the referees. They have assessors. Sometimes decisions go against you, but you just have to live with it and continue playing.”

Nigeria will be looking to maintain their perfect defensive record when they square up against Algeria at Stade Larbi Zaouli on Sunday, July 13.
