It’s a meeting that somehow never happened before — Russia vs Nigeria. Two storied football nations with rich legacies on separate continents collide at the iconic Luzhniki Stadium on Friday evening.

For Russia, it’s another chapter in a series of self-contained tests away from FIFA and UEFA spotlights. For Nigeria, it’s the dress rehearsal before a critical run-in that could define their World Cup future.

But make no mistake — this is no low-stakes international friendly. Russia are in ruthless form. Nigeria are quietly rebuilding. And the stage is set for something far more explosive than the billing suggests.

Match Preview

Since being barred from international competition in early 2022, Russia have turned to the global south for their football fix. Eight straight wins, 45 goals scored, zero conceded — on paper, they’re an unstoppable machine. The likes of Uzbekistan, Iraq, and Cuba have all been swept aside. Most recently, they thrashed Zambia 5-0 in March, showcasing the clinical edge of their emerging generation.

But the Super Eagles are no pushovers.

Under Eric Chelle, Nigeria are forging a new identity — gritty, athletic, and opportunistic. The 2-1 win over Ghana and penalty shootout triumph over Jamaica in the Unity Cup were more than morale boosters — they were proof that Nigeria’s depth runs deeper than expected.

While their World Cup qualifying campaign has stuttered — only 7 points from 6 games — the raw talent is unmistakable. A win in Moscow won’t earn them points, but it could deliver a psychological lift ahead of crunch clashes with Rwanda and South Africa.

Team News

Russia are expected to name a familiar XI. PSG’s Champions League-winning goalkeeper Matvey Safonov might be rested in favour of Aleksandr Maksimenko, but forward Nikolay Komlichenko — whose aggressive runs and instinctive finishing lit up their last few outings — will spearhead the attack.

Nigeria, however, are patching things together. With first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali absent due to personal reasons, Maduka Okoye returns to the fold hoping to rediscover his pre-2021 form. Defensively, William Troost-Ekong’s return is timely, especially with Ola Aina out. The backline needs leadership, and Ekong brings just that.

Midfield is light without Wilfred Ndidi and the creative dynamism of Samuel Chukwueze. But Fisayo Dele-Bashiru and Raphael Onyedika offer youthful energy and vertical thrust. In attack, all eyes are on Victor Boniface, the Bayer Leverkusen star who can bulldoze or finesse his way through any defence.

Match Details

Game: Russia vs Nigeria

Date: Friday, June 7, 2025

Kick-off: 6:00 PM local time (4:00 PM GMT)

Venue: Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow, Russia

Predicted Lineups
Russia (4-3-3)
:
Maksimenko; Vakhaniya, Diveev, Osipenko, Krugovoy; Komarov, Chernikov, Miranchuk; Guishenkov, Komlichenko, Mostovoy

Nigeria (4-3-3):
Okoye; Osayi-Samuel, Ekong, Ajayi, Onyemaechi; Onyedika, Onyeka, Dele-Bashiru; Moses Simon, Boniface, Uche

Prediction: Russia 2-2 Nigeria

This will be Russia’s first genuine test in over two years. Nigeria, despite missing several key figures, still pack enough pace and power to unsettle the hosts. Expect a fast start, nervy transitions, and a goal-laden draw — one that leaves both teams satisfied, but also asking questions.

For Russia, it’s about proving their dominance isn’t hollow. For Nigeria, it’s about reminding the world — and themselves — that they can still compete with any side, any time, anywhere
